I'm trying to restore to reality it's original sacred significance.
Pier Paolo Pasolini

In 2009, Georges Salameh carried out his first photographic documentation and collection of the presence of religious statues in certain Christian Lebanese regions. Two decades after he left the country and the end of the civil war, large statues of Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints and angels have begun to appear for the first time in the urban landscape outside their usual religious sanctuaries. In the book ASNAM, the gradual acceleration of the monumentalization of faith in public space in Lebanon is a central question. The book looks at the origins of how the representation of faith and its implications in the public sphere are interconnected to political and social issues. It's also a meditation on a confrontation between the sacred and the profane, on the rupture between private and public space, citizen and foreigner and on statues re-appropriation by political and religious interests.

QUADERNO DI DANZE E BATTAGLIE DELL'OPERA DEI PUPI

to watch video click here

The Quaderno di danze e battaglie dell'Opera dei Pupi by Giacomo Cuticchio is a Puppet Opera, exclusively musical work, where the listener's imagination can materialize what the music conveys. It is a kind of “program music” where in 5 tempos, one can enjoy topical moments of the Sicilian Puppet Theater such as battles, galloping, but also hellish brawls, palace intrigues, betrayals, love, loyalty.

This Notebook is a tribute to the work of the puppeteers and their creatures, it evokes with sound inspirations, enchantments suggestions, harmonies, and rhythms.

synopsis

On the southern outskirts of the city of Chania, in a semi-urban area, one can still find what remained from the orchards and from the historic stone-built farmhouse shelters called metohia, that once dominated the landscape. In this sparsely populated zone, has been erected a four-storey building, with pilotis and roof garden, on a plot that used to be part of an old orchard. The building houses six apartments and an office on the ground floor.

THEN AND AGAIN

Redefining ritual in the contemporary Balkans

The Goethe-Institut proposes an alternative view of the group exhibition "Then and Again. Rethinking Ritual in Contemporary Balkans", and invites the public to visit a new video installation at the Athens Institute from 10 to 21 June 2024. Curated by Dimitris Tsoublekas and George Prinos and produced by MeMSéA, this audiovisual work attempts, in line with the exhibition hosted at the MIET in Thessaloniki, to examine the contemporary rituals found in societies of Southeastern Europe. It includes works by nine artists and performers from different countries, shedding light on the role and importance of these recurring practices.

A project of the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with MIET - National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation and with the support of MOMus - Thessaloniki Museum of Photography.

synopsis

Video installation homage to the artist CHRYSSA ROMANOS from the exhibition THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS FOR AS MANY AS POSSIBLE, produced in collaboration with EMST.

The video serves as an epilogue to the exhibition of Chrysa Romanou. Its starting point is the book of the same name, Amour, which was an interpretation of the photographic archive of Nikos Kessanlis, Romanos' life partner. The video is enriched with additional audiovisual material, with the creative collaboration of artists Dimitris Tsoublekas and Georges Salameh and writer Amanda Michalopoulou. In a chained audiovisual narrative, Chrysa, like a long-distance runner, sets up exhibitions, smokes, discusses and runs through cities and country landscapes - in essence, her own life.

Chryssa Romanos (1931–2006) was one of the most significant Greek artists to emerge in the 1960s. She belongs to that group of Greek expat intellectuals who lived and worked in the artistic centres of the West and, for the very first time in the history of Greek art, actively participated in formulating international artistic movements of their era. The twenty years that Romanos spent in France (1961–1981) proved decisive for moulding her artistic identity. She was part of the circle of the influential critic Pierre Restany and the Nouveau Realistes and was one of the important female figures in the Paris art scene of the 1960s.

Open-ended narrative structures, mechanical reproduction, randomness, transparency, and the notion of play characterise her body of work. From her very first works, the motif of the labyrinth, the critique of consumerism, the political interest in social inequalities and injustice, the democratisation of art, the osmosis of art and everyday life, and the interest in travel recur as main thematic axes, and evolve as the artist herself matures and her social and political environment transforms.

The exhibition The Search for Happiness for as Many as Possible includes works from almost all periods of her oeuvre, highlighting their correlation and relationship. At the same time, it situated the works in their historical, political, and social context. The exhibition parcours begins with Myths, the paintings originating from the period when she left for Paris. It continues with the historical collages of 1965; the grand Meccano sculptural constructions, inspired kit toys of the same name typically intended for boys; silkscreen prints from the famed Mec Art Graphic atelier in Paris; and culminates into her most mature works, the Maps-Labyrinths, with their notable décollage technique on Plexiglas. Finally, it concludes with a video work based on the rich photographic archive of Chryssa Romanos and her husband, the equally influential artist and Athens School of Fine Arts professor Nikos Kessanlis, emphasising the indissoluble and reciprocal relationship between art and life.

The exhibition title is derived from a text by the eminent French theorist Pierre Restany found in a catalogue devoted to Chryssa Romanos and brings to the surface both the emotional and political dimensions of her work.
